Build and manage better road networks
Road Information System / HDM-4 integration
National Highways Authority of India
February / May 2006
In March 2006 ARRB was commissioned by CES/Parkman/PB to provide a two way integration between the Road Information System (RIS) and HDM-4. Version 2.0 had recently been released and it incorporated a number of fundamental changes in the architecture of the HDM-4 software, particularly with regard to its import/export ability now being in the Microsoft Access Format.
The RIS system was developed to act as a decision support tool for the management of the Golden Quadrilateral (5,846 km of National Highway). Due to its international reputation HDM-4 was used as the specialist pavements decision support tool whereby data would be exported from the RIS to investigate varying road investment scenarios.
It was decided that data would be exported from the RIS to HDM-4 via an integration tool that was designed specifically for the project. The data automatically populated a master workspace that was created for that set of data. The user then ran the workspace as desired and when completed the user pressed a button on the Integration tool to re-import the information back into the RIS.
Once the information was re-imported back into RIS the user could then visualise on the GIS the proposed works program or condition for either a defined year or a defined number of years depending upon the outputs imported.
The project for the integration took roughly three months to complete and provided proof that the new import/export functionality was a significant improvement over the previous version.
